תּוֹדָה Strong’s #8426 todah

Offer unto God the sacrifice of thanksgiving; And pay thy vows unto the Most High.

Psalm 50:14

The word todah comes from the verbal root yadah (Strongs #3034) meaning “to throw out the hands.” This root is in turn derived from the parent root yad (Strongs #3027) meaning “hand.” This word is synonymous with the verbal root halal (Strongs #1984), usually translated as “praise,” as can be seen in the following verse where these two words are used in parallel: I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify him with thanksgiving (Psalm 69:30). In Modern Hebrew this word is used for “thank you.
