Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

The Hebrew word tsur word is used 78 times in the Biblical text and is usually translated as “rock,” but means something more than just a rock. This is a large rock outcropping that can be used as a defensive position, a stronghold or fortress. With God is my salvation and my glory: The rock (tsur) of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. (Psalm 62:7). A related word, matsur, is usually translated as “a fortress.”
