לַיְלָה Strong’s #3915 laylah

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

Genesis 1:5

Just as the English word “night” means the dark hours of the day, so does the Hebrew word laylah. This word is related to other words meaning “to roll back,” because the sun is rolling back for its return to its rise in the east.
