Horses were not a common animal among the nomadic Hebrews, as they were not well suited for the desert. Throughout the Torah (the first five books of the Bible), the only horses mentioned are the horses and chariots of Egypt. In Deuteronomy 17:16 God forbids any future king of Israel from accumulating large numbers of horses by going down to Egypt to acquire them.
