The ox was the “workhorse” of the Ancient Hebrews. Because of its strength, it was used for pulling heavy loads and plowing fields. Another Hebrew word, eleph (Strongs #505), is spelled and pronounced identically and means a “thousand” in the sense of mightiness from the idea of the strength of the eleph.
